Discover Auckland

Set on a narrow isthmus on New Zealand's North Island, Auckland is a city where urban energy and natural beauty exist side by side without compromise. The skyline rises against water on almost every side, the dining scene draws from Polynesian, Asian, and European influences, and a deep Māori identity sits alongside layers of immigrant history woven through every neighbourhood. Volcanic summits, vibrant cultural precincts, and a creative coastal lifestyle give Auckland a character that is as diverse as the people who call it home.

53 Volcanic Cones Auckland’s skyline is shaped by one of the world’s most distinctive urban volcanic fields.
Largest Polynesian City A vibrant city with deep Māori roots and rich Pacific Island culture.
Two Harbours, Two Oceans The city straddles two harbours, where the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea sit just nine kilometres apart.
City of Sails With more boats per capita than any city on earth, Auckland lives up to its famous nickname.

Auckland’s story is closely tied to its remarkable setting between two harbours. Known in Māori as Tāmaki Makaurau, often translated as “Tāmaki desired by many,” the region has long been prized for its sheltered waters, fertile volcanic soils and rich food sources. Māori communities built terraced pā (fortified villages) on volcanic cones such as Maungakiekie and Maungawhau, whose summits still offer sweeping views across the city.

Today, Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and the main arrival point for many international visitors. Its harbours remain central to life here, from the lively waterfront and island-dotted Hauraki Gulf to Rangitoto, the distinctive volcanic landmark rising beyond the city.

Auckland’s appeal lies in the variety gathered within one place. Museums, markets and dining neighbourhoods sit alongside coastal lookouts, volcanic landscapes and busy marinas, while Māori, Pacific, Asian, European and other communities shape its energetic cultural life. This meeting of coast, culture and city makes Auckland a fitting introduction to modern New Zealand.
