Kaikōura
Where giants roam beneath the waves and mountains rise from the edge of the sea.
Discover Kaikōura
Located on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, Kaikōura is a place where dramatic landscapes and extraordinary wildlife exist side by side. The Pacific Ocean meets the rugged Kaikōura Ranges in a setting unlike anywhere else in the country, creating a rich marine environment renowned for whales, dolphins, seals, and seabirds. Deep offshore waters, spectacular coastal scenery, and a strong connection to the natural world define life here. It is a destination where every turn seems to reveal another reminder of nature's scale and beauty.
Kaikōura’s identity is inseparable from the ocean, which has shaped the area’s culture, livelihoods and way of life for generations. Around 80% of the world’s whale and dolphin species migrate past this coastline, contributing to an exceptional natural environment.
This abundance has made Kaikōura one of New Zealand’s most celebrated wildlife destinations, where encounters with sperm whales, dolphins and seal colonies unfold against a remarkable mountain backdrop. Fresh seafood and a strong connection to the sea remain part of the town’s character, bringing its Māori heritage and modern visitor experience naturally together.
The landscape is still being shaped by powerful forces. In 2016, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake lifted sections of coastline and exposed reefs once hidden beneath the water. The community’s recovery added another chapter to Kaikōura’s story, but the enduring appeal remains unchanged: abundant wildlife, dramatic scenery and an unforgettable meeting of mountains and sea.
