Hidden deep within Fiordland National Park in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is a breathtaking natural masterpiece sculpted by glaciers over thousands of years. Inky waters stretch between sheer, forest-clad cliffs, while the mist-shrouded summit of Mitre Peak rises 1,692 metres directly from the water and cascading waterfalls descend into the fiord below. At times the water becomes serene and mirror-like, reflecting the immense mountains as the fiord winds towards the Tasman Sea. Dolphins, seals and penguins find sanctuary within this remarkably pristine wilderness, adding another layer of magic to a landscape that feels almost beyond imagination.
Eighth Wonder of the WorldMilford Sound’s inky waters and towering, mist-clad mountains so impressed author Rudyard Kipling that he dubbed it the “eighth wonder of the world.”
Protected Marine WatersThe Piopiotahi Marine Reserve provides sanctuary for dolphins, seals and rare Fiordland crested penguins.
World Heritage WildernessMilford Sound / Piopiotahi lies within 1.2 million hectares of UNESCO World Heritage listed Fiordland National Park.
The Story of PiopiotahiIts Māori name recalls the piopio bird, which is said to have flown here to mourn the death of the legendary hero Māui
Milford Sound / Piopiotahi was carved by glaciers on an immense scale, leaving a narrow fiord enclosed by sheer cliffs, rainforest, and mountains that continue deep beneath the water. Māori visited the wider Fiordland region to hunt, fish and gather takiwai (a translucent form of pounamu or greenstone).
Its entrance is so well concealed from the Tasman Sea that Captain James Cook sailed past twice without realising what lay beyond. Welsh sealer John Grono later became the first European known to enter the fiord, naming it after Milford Haven in Wales; the name Milford Sound came into use later.
The experience begins on the spectacular road from Te Anau, passing glacier-carved valleys, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and rainforest before descending beyond the Homer Tunnel. From the mountain road to the first view of Mitre Peak, the journey adds to Milford Sound’s otherworldly sense of scale and wonder. A cruise then carries you along the fiord towards the Tasman Sea, offering an entirely different perspective from the water. Surrounded by immense peaks and rugged wilderness, you begin to appreciate the extraordinary scale of the landscape.
What You'll Experience
Some of New Zealand's most treasured experiences, all part of your time in Milford Sound.
Journey from Te Anau to Milford Sound along the famous Milford Road, where the scenery is every bit as remarkable as the destination. The route reveals the extraordinary diversity of Fiordland National Park, travelling through vast valleys and native beech forest, past mirror-like lakes, and beneath towering mountains within the Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area. Coach travel offers a comfortable, stress-free way to enjoy the winding road, with elevated views, expert commentary, and opportunities for scenic stops along the way.
Commonly known as the Milford Road, State Highway 94 covers 119 kilometres (74 miles) between Te Anau and Milford Sound.
Wildlife of Milford Sound
Keep watch for wildlife as you cruise through the protected waters of Milford Sound/Piopiotahi. New Zealand fur seals may be seen resting on rocky shores, while bottlenose dolphins occasionally travel through the fiord and rare tawaki/Fiordland crested penguins inhabit the wider coastline. Every sighting adds to the wonder of this extraordinary meeting place between rainforest, mountains and sea. Wildlife sightings are possible but never guaranteed, as the animals are encountered in their natural environment.
A layer of dark freshwater creates “deep-water emergence”, allowing species normally found at much greater depths to live surprisingly close to the surface.
