Discover the Coromandel

Wrapped in native forest and surrounded by sparkling coastline on New Zealand's North Island, the Coromandel is where many New Zealanders go to escape. Beach towns spill gently towards sheltered bays, artists and craftspeople are drawn by the scenery, and the landscape remains refreshingly unspoiled. It is a place that invites you to linger, whether you're wandering a white-sand beach or simply watching the light shift across the Pacific.

400 Kilometres of Coastline A peninsula of hidden coves, golden beaches, and spectacular ocean views.
Protected Wilderness Large areas of protected forest and shoreline help preserve the peninsula's natural beauty.
A Haven for Creatives The region's natural beauty has inspired generations of painters, potters, sculptors, and makers.
Gold Rush Heritage Historic mining towns and old railway routes tell the story of the Coromandel's gold rush era.

The Coromandel is a rugged peninsula of native forest, sheltered bays and more than 400 kilometres of coastline. Māori communities have long lived from its rich fisheries and forest resources, forming connections with the harbours and headlands that remain deeply significant today.

During the nineteenth century, kauri timber and gold transformed the region. Forests fuelled a booming timber trade, while gold discoveries in the 1860s drew prospectors and turned small settlements into busy mining towns. Historic buildings and traces of former railway routes still recall this colourful chapter.

Today, the Coromandel offers a gentler kind of escape. Protected forest cloaks the hills, coastal roads reveal beaches and quiet bays, and artists and makers add creative character to small towns across the peninsula. Its appeal lies in the balance: spectacular nature, layered history and communities that remain closely connected to the land and sea. It is a place that invites visitors to slow down, explore and enjoy a distinctly New Zealand coastal rhythm.

What You'll Experience

Some of New Zealand's most treasured experiences, all part of your time in the Coromandel Peninsula.

Cathedral Cove

Driving Creek Railway

Ride the nearby Driving Creek Railway, a unique rail tour and must-do activity in the Coromandel. Travel through regenerating native forest and the thriving wildlife sanctuary, climb 120 metres on a narrow-gauge line to the summit, and step off at the EyeFull Tower to enjoy panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf. Along the way, your guide will share the inspiring story of how art, engineering and conservation shaped Driving Creek Railway.

This unique rail experience began with a very practical goal of transporting clay and firewood down to the pottery kilns.

Explore
Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach

Undoubtably one of New Zealand’s most unique natural hot pools, Hot Water Beach is a special place where warm springs bubble up through the golden sand. Enjoy the opportunity to dig your very own ‘spa’ pool and wallow in the warm waters just metres from the Pacific Ocean. With stunning coastal views and pōhutukawa‑framed cliffs, this is a delightful place to relax and soak in nature.

Hot Water Beach is a rare natural wonder where geothermally heated mineral water bubbles up from deep within the earth to emerge through the sand.

Driving Creek Railway

Cathedral Cove

Enjoy a scenic walk to Cathedral Cove, where you’ll spend time soaking up the beauty of one of New Zealand’s most photogenic beaches. The track follows the cliff-tops overlooking the coastline, before descending towards the beach. Located on the edge of the great Mercury Bay, Cathedral Cove is renowned for its gigantic arched cavern that passes through a rock headland to join two coves, creating a cathedral-like arch that is picture-perfect. A dramatically large pinnacle of pumice breccia rock known as 'Te Hoho' is set just off the beach, sculpted by wind and water over centuries.

Cathedral Cove is part of Te Whanganui-o-Hei Marine Reserve, a sanctuary for marine life covering approximately 23 square kilometres.

Cooks Beach & Mercury Bay

Cooks Beach

End your day spending time at Cooks Beach - named after Captain James Cook, who sailed on the HMS Endeavour into Mercury Bay in 1769. Famous for its 3-kilometre golden sandy beach, it is now a popular retreat for Kiwis to swim, stroll and sunbath during summer months. Cooks Beach is flanked by Shakespeare Cliff to the west and Purangi Estuary to the east.

When Captain James Cook made anchor at Cooks Beach off Purangi, he unknowingly chose the same bay that Kupe, the legendary Polynesian explorer, had chosen when he first landed in New Zealand in the fourteenth century.

Whitianga harbour and scenic surrounds

Whitianga at Leisure

Enjoy time at leisure in Whitianga, a relaxed coastal town beside Mercury Bay. Wander along the waterfront, browse local shops or choose from cafés, restaurants and casual dining spots serving everything from fresh seafood to international flavours. You might stroll beside the harbour, spend time near Buffalo Beach or simply unwind and enjoy the easy-going atmosphere of this popular Coromandel holiday town.

Whitianga has been continuously settled for more than 1,000 years, following an early visit by Māori explorer Kupe.
