About Rugged Off-road Adventure
The vehicle climbs until the sounds of Wānaka fade into stillness. Beyond the windows, private backroads disappear into an immense high-country landscape, where the sense of space grows with every turn and solitude becomes as memorable as the view.
The Story of This Place
The adventure takes place on historic West Wānaka Station, a privately owned high-country farm covering approximately 30,000 acres. Ridgeline travels its private backroads to reveal historical sites and share how farming life has evolved in this remote alpine environment.
Cultural Significance
High-country farming is an important part of Wānaka’s rural identity. With Ridgeline, visitors experience a working sheep, cattle and deer farm while local guides share stories about farming life, European heritage and the people who have worked this land.
The Experience of Visiting
Set out with an expert Ridgeline guide for an off-road journey through the private backroads of West Wānaka Station. Meet red deer, cattle and sheep at close range, visit historic sites and stop at elevated viewpoints rarely seen by the public. Help check and reset one of Ridgeline’s predator traps, contributing directly to its conservation work on the station. Two optional 20-minute walks explore an alpine meadow and lakeside forest. The experience pauses at Ridgeline’s exclusive Alpine Café, a scenic outdoor stop in the high country where freshly brewed coffee and its famous fruit cake are served.
Natural Features
The station contains contrasting high-country habitats, from open alpine meadows to ancient forest beside Lake Wānaka. Its elevation reaches up to 1,000 metres above sea level, creating expansive views across the surrounding lake, mountains and rugged terrain. The working landscape also supports red deer, cattle and sheep.
